Opening Reception : Exhibition "Pulsions" at Pro Arts Gallery

  • Pro Arts Gallery 150 Frank H Ogawa Plaza Oakland (map)

PULSIONS came about due to a series of observations with respect to the state of contemporary art in France. In our increasingly globalized world where identities and cultures are multiple, is it still relevant to speak of the influence and impact of French vision on the world of art today?

The French art scene draws a wide international audience primarily due to the liberal view of contemporary art that characterizes it, where the uniqueness of each artist and body of work is prioritized at the expense of the cultural context. However, it is this very culture that influences the artists who make up this group. PULSIONS seeks to tap into this French force by bringing together different artists, each of whom is unique, to create an original and powerful artistic experience.

With a focus on graphic art, PULSIONS explores worlds where the influence of science, technology, and politics are at the forefront. It evokes images of a California that is caught somewhere between myth and scientific reality. Each artist through their respective chosen field (typography, cosmology, meteorology, and other writing systems), questions the relationship between human beings and technology, the natural world, and the universe. In doing so, they discover the connection between science and spirituality, fusion and alienation.
