Villa San Francisco International Residency: C. Jarry, AE. Judaïque

  • Villa Albertine San Francisco (map)

1989. 30 years ago, the Berlin wall was falling down. Today, it’s hope that is taking a tumble.

In the meantime, the world hasn’t stopped fencing itself off: 60 new walls have been built and thousands of kilometers of barbed wire have been implemented, adding up to al- most of 40,000 km of barriers, the equivalent of the Earth’s circumference.

With the passing of time, the geographers who had erased the iron curtain from their maps have had to face the facts: if the physical barrier had effectively vanished from landscapes and Atlases, the mental ones had endured, and the temptation to lock ourselves behind remained an ongoing concern…

This is when artists seized this object, by multiplying the creative interventions at the border and on the borders, in order to shake up our imaginaries and overturn the “wall in our heads.”

Recently, they have been joined by a new generation of (counter) cartographers, engaged in the idea of breaking away from the traditional representation of the border, one of a fracture line. They too participate in this creative process, and their “scientific artwork” on borders tears down the barriers between art, science and activism. Today, hope is reborn thanks to these “artivists” who create bonds beyond national limits and invent new imaginary worlds for our borders.
